Resiliently mounted wall and ceiling Gypsum board (Drywall/ Sheetrock/ Wallboard) is fast becoming an industry standard for reducing sound transfer between rooms. (Soundproofing Rooms).

Build-out of the pad/channel assembly is 1-1/2″

It mounts with  screws (or other fastener appropriate to the material to which it’s mounted), providing a low-profile sound control system that is low-cost and simple to implement.

The gap at the floor is sealed either with lots of caulk and/or with “Backer Square” to reduce the amount of caulk needed to seal the large gap left by the vibration pad.  Adding one layer of 5/8″ Fire Code Drywall in this manner will more than double the sound reduction of the existing wall.  More sound reduction would be obtained by adding more sound control elements into the project.

Ceilings are handled similar to the above.  Installation details are the same as for other clips.

Pipe Insulation for Quieting Noisy Pipes.




    Pipes need insulation too. Not just for thermal purposes, (even though that’s important, too), but especially for sound  control.

Note the different sizes listed in the chart for Copper vs Iron/PVC.  Measure your pipe carefully to be sure you get the right size for your kind of pipe.  The size may be printed right on it.  Pipe insulation should fit snugly around the pipe.  If you should get the wrong size, oversize, cut a strip out of it lengthways to reduce the  inside diameter.  Don’t overlap!  If you have some that’s too small for your pipe, you can order some 1″ thick “Super Soundproofing” Absorbent Foam and fit strips of it into the pipe insulation to widen it.

When joining pipe insulation together, apply a light coating of contact cement to the edges and allow to dry, then apply a tack coat and press edges together to join.  Cover the pipe with glue to provide an intimate contact to the pipe insulation to improve damping effect of the noise vibration in the pipe.

Pipe insulation comes in 6′ lengths and is to be slit lengthways for easy installation.  It’s best to apply the material to the pipe with adhesive, as well as sealing the slit with adhesive, long-ways.  (A sharp razor knife or electric turkey carving knife may be used).   The entire pipe must be glued and covered!  No gaps or crevices.

Now, After covering all your pipe, in walls or ceilings, for vertical runs of pipe, line the inside if the wall cavity the pipe is in with “Super Soundproofing” Foam, the thicker the better. 1/2″ is nominal. Cover the whole inside of the panel, front and back, including the stud facings.  For horizontal runs, do the same, additionally make sure the pipe has clearance through the holes in the studs and is not touching.  Sometimes removing/repositioning the clamps holding the pipe will help.  Push soundproofing mat into these clearances.  If there is too little clearance try to widen the gap somehow.  (Saw, chisel, drill away, etc).  The pipe must have clearance or it will transmit sound vibration into the studding, which in turn  will re-radiate it.

When installing new pipe, if you have a choice, cast iron pipe is superior to PVC pipe for noise control, but should still be covered with pipe insulation.

This insulation will not support a flame, has no odor, nor will it absorb moisture, cause rot or mildew, etc

Flame-Resistant Foam Panels for High-Temperature Applications and More.


FireFlex Foam is an excellent noise absorber and is rated for high-temperature applications or in buildings requiring Class One rated materials. Heat resistant to 482° F and able to withstand constant temperatures up to 320° F,  FireFlex is engineered for environments where temperatures are high, sparks or other hot materials may fly, large numbers of people congregate or flammability is an issue.

FireFlex materials are constructed of lightweight, porous acoustics melamine.  The material’s internal structure is a spacious cellular complex of slim, flexible webs that are membrane-free and completely open-celled. The result is that FireFlex materials are low-density and extremely lightweight.

FireFlex is approved as a Class One building material and is resistant to many chemicals. Panels come in two different colors: White and Gray.  For an added affect, We can paint panels with three different types of paint.  Standard latex, Multi-Spec latex (great for the theatre room or for that extra splash of color).  Third, for damp areas and/or easy cleanup, chose FireFlex with a Hypalon protective skin. These Sound Blocking foams do not reflect sound.

Pick the Right Size for your Applications

Pick the right pad size for the bearing weight, not the size of the footing. Pads with 3″ are best for 2X4 sills for wall studding. Put under the studs or space about 2-3 feet apart under the sill depending on wall load. Use the 2″ X 3/8″ pads neoprene without cork as support for your drywall panels edge. Cork center Pads are all approx. 7/8″ thick.

Use rubber furniture cups to keep vibrating, and active machinery (like washing machines) on to the vibration pads. Sometimes some construction adhesive, like “Liquid Nails” or “GOOP” is helpful.

Using our tape for soundproofing

A variety of tapes are available to assist in accomplishing effective sound proofing. When you need every last STC point, little things mean a lot!

Here are some of the tapes we stock and a short explanation of their uses.

How to “Stagger-Stud” and soundproof existing stud walls using Sound Isolation Padding Tape: Assuming the wallboard has been removed and the studs are exposed- Apply 2 layers of the green 1/8″X1-7/16″ tape to every other stud. This will build out the stud by about a 1/4″. The tape has a peel-off backing and may be cut with scissors. Place your wall panels over the studs and fasten them only to the studs which have the tape. If the other wall is open do this to it also, alternating the studs, that is, do not apply tape to studs which have tape on them already on the other side. This system breaks the sound path through the studding and is very effective and inexpensive for reducing sound transfer through the wall. If you don’t do anything else, do this! It can improve the sound reduction of your wall, especially at speech frequencies. Of course, for maximum sound reduction, other added techniques are to be employed!

Very effective as an isolation padding for joists and metal Resilient (RC-1 RC-2) and or Hat channel. (DWFT)

TIP: After running your drywall screws in, back them off a bit by holding connection, then rotating your screw gun counter-clockwise to release some of the pressure. This will relieve some of the the pressure of the drywall panels on the tape, allowing it to perform better.  Just make sure the head is recessed enough that filling and painting it will not show through.

Black Foam tape is used to seal doors and windows as well as to change the acoustical properties of flat sheets installed on walls and ceilings. It’s a 1/8″thick vinyl-nitrile tape with self-adhesive backing. (Different than the above). Same material as our absorbent mat. Wrap pipes, ducts or stick on metal panels (computers too!) to reduce noise transfer and vibration. Use the 4″ width cut into squares to sandwich between wall panels (Drywall and “soundboard”   Homasote) for improved sound control and frequency response. Use the 2″ width on “hat” channel or wall stud facing and the 1″ on resilient channel for additional padding of the drywall panels.

We also have a gray tape in widths of 1/4″, 3/8″ & 1/2″ for door sealing. (For those who prefer a lighter color than the black above).

Magnetic tape is also available. Used mostly for holding curtain/drapes together at the center joining, it’s also useful for many other applications where the joining needs to be redone on a regular basis. Also for Plastic window inserts!.

  • A specially formulated black tape for holding “Flooring” or “Floormat” seams (MLV) together. Apply a thin bead of caulk at the seam joint opening and cover with the tape. 2″ wide X 108′ long rolls. Lead tape is actually preferred for this and we have it in 1″, 1-1/2″ and 2″ widths.
  • Super Soundproofing™ Acoustical Sound Backer Square foam tape. Like “Baker Rod”, “Backer Square” is a 1/2″X1/2″ (or 1/2″X3/4″) square closed cell foam tape for closing off gaps at the edges of wallboard without having to use inordinate amounts of acoustical caulk. The adhesive backing makes it easy to apply to the edges of the panels before mounting to the wall or ceiling. Can also be used to seal large gaps in doors or windows.
  • Metal (lead) 5 Mil tape: probably the very best material for sound control. Typically used on seams of drywall panels and along the perimeter of the walls and ceiling where joints are difficult to seal against sound leakage. Very effective on pipes and inside wall panels. Usually very difficult to find- to our knowledge only available from us on this website. Available in 1″, 1-1/2″ with adhesive backing and in 2″ wide (1/32″) with or without adhesive backing.   • Double-sided foam tape is used to attach sound control curtains and drapes to themselves and the walls to improve sound control. Our product is a sheet of 4 strips 3/4″ wide and 4.5″ long for a total of 18″ with a double peel-off backing. Use wherever the curtain needs to be brought up to the wall. Usually one sheet per side of a 8′ tall curtain will work fine. You can use your own foam tape or ours- it’s $1 per sheet, probably cheaper than you can buy it locally if you can find it. Not to be used for holding foam or MLV.
