Well, let me get my 2 cents worth about John Granahan: He’s great!

I needed to soundproof a room built in my garage for a home theater. First it required figuring out what to do with the garage door, since the motor and related track were occupying space where I wanted the room to be. Home Theater Curtains? Yes!
Any room should have at least 40% of it’s total area covered with absorbent material to reduce annoying reverberation, which reduces speech intelligibility.
Acoustical Curtains (Acoustical Draperies), are useful for adding absorbency to a room that has many reflective surfaces, such as home theatres, etc.. Sound control through a doorway? Yes! Soundproofing (Blackout), drapes are a quick, effective and cheap way to improve room acoustics (hang on the walls), as well as to block sound from coming through walls, doorways, windows, patio doors, etc. Especially effective on thin walls, such as mobile homes.
A cheap way to get a good nights sleep!

We now have a good stock of used, (very good condition!), heavy-duty soundproofing pleated drapes removed from commercial soundproofing room installations. We have some various widths (Approx.) lengths to cover walls or windows in panels. They are made of a close woven vinyl or polyester/cotton blend satin fabric with a heavy plastic fabric-like backing of Therma-Foam (creating a sound trapping space). These sound control curtains normally cost many hundreds ($$$), when new. Condition is quite good, but on some, slight discolorations or spotting may be evident but some of it may be easily removed. We have some of different colors, your choice, out they go for peanut prices. Better get some before they are all gone! Lengths are a panel for covering a wall (including a window) and sold by the inch of width: (1″ = $1). We have some with more spotting/damage for cheaper prices – inquire! These spotted ones have been proven inexpensive for noisy bird rooms to reduce reverb. Pix below show darker than they really are on most browsers. If the colors or design is not to your liking, use them as “backup” curtains behind your desired curtains.

These drapes work best if they are not stretched tight and completely extended flat to the wall Pick a width that will allow some accordion folding when fully pulled across. (Add at least a third to the width for this). For the best soundproofing effect, try to allow at least a foot of margin around the window/door opening.

Any kind of acoustical curtains can be “doubled up” where maximum soundproofing is wanted: ___—-___—-___—-___ (Top View). Hang the first layer on regular curtain rods, then the second layer on extended rods, creating another airspace between the first set of curtains and the second. Both sides of a opening can be covered this way. These are heavy curtains (12-25 Lbs Each!) and may require a pole rod. (Get rods at the hardware store! Ask for “15 year warranty” rods.)

Use double-sided tape to seal curtain edges to wall for improved results! Also to seal center overlap of two curtains where they join together. Use it left, right and center to seal vertical edges of curtains thus reducing sound migration around and through the curtain joints at the walls and center overlap. Magnetic tape can also be cut into strips and used for this purpose.

Green Glue is a Visco-Elastic adhesive used in between sheets of standard drywall, wood product paneling, cement board, and many other building materials to reduce sound transfer.

Third party acoustical tests demonstrated a STC rating of 56 using Green Glue in a standard single stud wall with common drywall. Low Frequency sound isolation was greatly improved over older technologies such as resilient channel.

For existing walls, just apply Green Glue to some new sheets of drywall and stick up on the wall, fasten in a places, tape off and paint or wallpaper!

For bare studding or ceiling joists, apply padding tape before hanging the sheets of wall paneling for even more enhanced sound control!

Resiliently mounted wall and ceiling Gypsum board (Drywall/ Sheetrock/ Wallboard) is fast becoming an industry standard for reducing sound transfer between rooms. (Soundproofing Rooms).

The SSP Sound Isolation Mounting Clip is used with Drywall Furring Channel (DWFC) in order to mount drywall panels.  The clip has a molded neoprene element that provides high sound insulation between the panel and the framing.  Metal ends provide sturdy support.

It mounts with  screws (or other fastener appropriate to the material to which it’s mounted), providing a low-profile sound control system that is low-cost and simple to implement.

One mount is required for every four sq. ft. of wallboard area.  A typical 8′ wall  would have SSP clips mounted to the DWFC  creating three horizontal rows, one a few inches from the top and one few inches from the bottom and another across the middle.  2″ Neoprene 3/8″ thick Vibration pads are spaced every 2′ on the floor to support the edge of the drywall panels.  The panels are then attached to the DWFC with drywall screws in the normal manner.  A gap must be provided where the walls meet the ceiling and other walls and sealed with acoustical caulk.

The gap at the floor is sealed either with lots of caulk and/or with “Backer Square” to reduce the amount of caulk needed to seal the large gap left by the vibration pad.  Adding one layer of 5/8″ Fire Code Drywall in this manner will more than double the sound reduction of the existing wall.  More sound reduction would be obtained by adding more sound control elements into the project.

Ceilings are handled similar to the above.  Installation details are the same as for other clips.

The correct DWFC (track) for the ISO Mount- in 5′ lengths- we also have it with tape padding already applied!  

Notice about the availability of steel track: Supplies are tight, make sure you can get the proper 25 gage material before you start your job!  Best to order from us to make sure.

Snoring presents particular problems because the sound is usually low frequency and quite loud and nearby. The low frequency headset would work best as well as some offsetting noise nearby, such as a fan or hiss like from between the stations on your FM radio.

Pipes need insulation too. Not just for thermal purposes, (even though that’s important, too), but especially for sound control.

This pipe insulation is the biggest, heaviest and the best thermal/sound insulator we could find and deserves to be installed in the walls/floor/ceiling before closing them up.

Note the different sizes listed in the chart for copper vs Iron/PVC.  Measure your pipe carefully to be sure you get the right size for your kind of pipe.  Pipe should fit snugly inside the pipe insulation.  If you should get the wrong size, oversize, cut a strip out of it lengthways to reduce the  inside diameter. Don’t overlap!  If you have some that’s too small for your pipe, you can order some 1″ thick “Super Soundproofing” Absorbent Foam and fit strips of it into the pipe insulation to widen it.  When joining pipe insulation together, apply a light coating of contact cement to the edges and allow to dry, then apply a tack coat and press edges together to join.  Cover the pipe with glue to provide an intimate contact to the pipe insulation to improve damping effect of the noise vibration.

Pipe insulation comes in 6′ lengths and is to be slit lengthways for easy installation.  It’s best to apply the material to the pipe with adhesive, as well as sealing the slit with adhesive, long-ways. (A sharp razor knife or electric turkey carving knife may be used).   The entire pipe must be glued and covered!  No gaps or crevices.

Now, After covering all your pipe, for vertical runs of pipe, line the inside if the wall cavity the pipe is in with “Super Soundproofing” Foam, the thicker the better. 1/2″ is nominal. Cover the whole inside of the panel, front and back, including the stud facings.  For horizontal runs, do the same, additionally make sure the pipe has clearance through the holes in the studs and is not touching. Sometimes removing/repositioning the clamps holding the pipe will help.  Push soundproofing mat into these clearances.  If there is too little clearance try to widen the gap somehow.  (Saw, chisel, drill away, etc).  The pipe must have clearance or it will transmit sound vibration into the studding, which in turn, will re-radiate it.

When installing pipe, if you have a choice, cast iron pipe is superior to PVC pipe for noise control, but should still be covered with pipe insulation.

This insulation will not support a flame.
